Yeah!! Last long run before taper time! It was a WINDY 25km run. The day before a tornado touched down in the town next to us.  We were still feeling the after effects of the storm with strong wind gusts all day.
I enjoyed the view from the sandy beach but the swim was going to have to wait!

~Road 150km followed by a 20 minute run off the bike~

To say we were looking forward to our last long ride before taper is an understatement!!!
It's hard to believe Ironman Tremblant is only 18 days away but we are more than ready for race day to be here.  After many long 7 hour rides, week after week, we are starting to mentally and physically feel the toll of it all.
Let's just say we are starting to get a little grumpy! We have become so in tune with our bike that the any slight change can be VERY annoying! Let's just hope we can work out any kinks before race day.

We stopped at a beautiful bridge in the country for some reflection, prayer and discussed our hopes and plans for race day.  We agreed it's not about the finish time, but rather our main goal is to enjoy the day and finish healthy and happy!
( or rather ...survive... those climbs in Tremblant are a killer! )

It's been great to get some open water swims in since it's waaay different than swimming in a pool!
Especially since we'll be swimming this Ironman in a wetsuit so it has been good practice to swim in our wetsuits.
The water lately has been quite choppy. White cap choppy!
I got in a few 70 minute swims. Besides seeing one fish, the swims have felt long and uneventful!

Today's long ride was a near perfect ride. The weather could not have been any better for cycling. Not much wind,it was overcast and not too hot.
We found some new beautiful quiet roads in the country to keep things interesting.

Both Lisa and I tried some new items for fuel. Lisa brought along pretzels along with her power gels and power bar  gel blasts. ( she loved the pretzels ) I brought a power bar ( which was awesome) and power bar gels, waffle honey cookies and a couple baked potatoes. An ex-pro cyclist that I know who is in his 70's used to cycle professionally in Europe.  He said all the cyclists used to eat baked potatoes on the bike for carbs. I thought I would give it a try because the sweet/sticky/goey stuff gets tiring after awhile.
The potatoe was not that appetizing, however we did have a good ride, so who knows. I might not give up on it yet!

Our water stops consisted of a gas station, a church/cemetery with no luck, a community centre, and our usual  Home Hardware stop.  I took the opportunity to stretch at Home Hardware. When Lisa came out of the store  I was lying flat on my back, I think she thought I had died. Who knew lying on the pavement and stretching could feel so good!

As always Lisa and I had many laughs. If we are not laughing at ourselves we are laughing at each other! Thank goodness for laughter, it makes all of this so much more enjoyable and manageable.

A BBQ at Lisa's along with an incredible soak in the hot tub was much needed.
As I type this with tired legs and watch stage 6 of the Tour de France, I can't help but think it is so much easier watching OTHER people cycle !!

The home stretch is near!!

This is a common occurrence with Lisa and I. We should really just make this a permanent tattoo.

How many cyclists does it take to remove a SpeedFill bottle...two of course!!

High fives to 160km done!!

Today's training session was all about short intense hill training. I road out to a hill and did 6 hill repeats on a fairly long climb. Then road home and switched out my tri bike to my mountain bike and road to another hill that local runners refer to as " horror hill"
The dirt hill doesn't look like much in the photo but it's a killer! I road up the hill in my mountain bike and even in my granny gear I was hurting.
I ran up and down the hill 3 times and then called it quits!

Just to suffer a little more I then headed over to the pool for a short speed session.
I spent 20 minutes in the pool with a 10 minute focus on 50m sprints with 15 second recovery.

I should be nice and rested for my 170km ride tomorrow. HAHA!!

After a day's rest the plan was to wake up early and get a 30km run done.
It could not have been a nicer morning for a run. They were calling for thunderstorms, however the rain held off and it was an overcast cool breezy morning.

I ran loops for 3 hours in cottage county and felt it was one of my better runs so far.
What a difference weather, location and having proper fuel can make!

I am so glad Chris's leg injury is starting to feel a bit better. He was finally able to get out for a  5km run and ran with Lisa's husband. He had strict orders not to be a " Ricky Racer!"
I need him for Ironman!!

How could it be anything but a beautiful ride... we were in cottage country!!
We set out early with a map as our guide since both of us were unfamiliar with many of the roads we were about to travel.

Chris road up to the cottage the day before on his bike. Unfortunately he was met with brutal headwinds for the entire 140km ride so he called it a day at 110km and I picked him up in the sag wagon! ;)

We found a nice flat out and back route on quiet roads with good pavement.
At around 100km we were starting to get a little hungry and ready to bonk. Thank goodness for Grammies Pizza! It was SOO good!

We had stopped at community centres along the way to top up with water during our ride.
Mistakenly we should have topped up with more water at Grammies Pizza because we were on empty at about 130km.

Luckily we were able to fill up at a tap on the side of a country house. The water was HOT but much needed!
We soon made it to town and filled up at the beer store with some COLD water.
155km done and just in time for dinner!

Chris and I celebrated Canada Day by going out for a nice 30km evening ride. Conditions were near perfect until about 15km in to the ride we heard the dreaded sound.. "BOOM !!!"
Chris get's a flat :(
Chris tried changing his tire but his spare tube wasn't compatible with his new upgraded wheels.
I rode home with the company of my shadow to go and get the car.  " Let's see how fast you can ride" Chris say's to me. No pressure!!!
Luckily there was a tailwind home and I came to his rescue! Again! ;)

Recovery week is always a welcomed week, yet we always hope we will feel "recovered" and we never quite feel recovered! We remember this feeling all too well from when we trained for our last Ironman. As our LONG training day's start to increase in time/distance and we begin the bulk of our heavy training it can take a toll on oneself both mentally and physically.
Feeling tired, sore, bored, injuries, you name it, we are starting to feel it all over again!

Then we remind ourself the end is almost near and when the end is here we will miss it!
As well it's a reminder to ourselves to be grateful for our health and the ability to be able to do what we do.
We raised our glasses and toasted to finishing a beautiful 70km ride... cheers...until next time!
